artist statement

Art has always been a part of my life experience. As a mathematician, I was fascinated by shapes, the use of space, and the relationship between the two. My mathematician self wants to understand visual qualities such as balance, continuity, and color. My artist self wants to give those abstract concepts form and composition; to find and illuminate the intersections among those varying elements.

I find great joy in creating art that channels all that I feel, think, imagine, and hope for. I strive to use my personal inspirations to tell a story and share my inner joy with the viewer. Applying layer upon layer of paint and texture, I move between order and chaos; harmony and dissonance; structure and free form. My art coexists between these ideas, and no matter the subject, is always an exuberant infusion of saturated color.

The journey of creation removes me from time and space where my art becomes more than simply self-expression. It becomes a reflection of the timeless and universal qualities of life.

biography

It is a rare combination in finding an artist who is also a mathematician. But the connection becomes quite obvious when you study the vibrant paintings of Carole Kuck. Her interest in shapes, space, and balance is a result of her love of math. Those concepts and theories are translated on the canvas in rich, intense hues resulting in very dynamic and expressive art. There is a musical quality to her art, and no matter the subject, always a sense of joy.

For years Carole’s primary artistic expression was through music as a pianist, composer, and songwriter– writing and performing in ensembles and for musicals. Her first experience of painting came when she painted a mural, describing that experience as feeling more herself than ever before.

After retiring from teaching at a visual and performing arts magnet school, she dedicated her time to her art practice and was accepted into the Artist Mentorship Program at Art On 30th in San Diego where she studied with gallery owner and artist Kate Ashton, as well as artists Sheila Daube, Roberta Dyer, and Brenda York.

Ms. Kuck, originally from Wapakoneta, Ohio is now living and creating her paintings and writing her music in San Diego, California. Carole is an award-winning and published artist and continues to be in juried shows, including national exhibitions.
